About

Pilates - A Brief History

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. Pilates called his method "Contrology". It is practiced worldwide, and especially in western countries such as Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. As of 2005, there were 11 million people practicing the discipline regularly and 14,000 instructors in the United States.

Joe Pilates based his work on three principles: breath, whole-body health and whole-body commitment; with the 'whole-body' encompassing mind, body and spirit.

It is in the honouring of the Pilates Principles that the depth of the work is achieved. These Principles are traditionally cited as:

Breath

Concentration

Centring

Control

Precision

Flow

I was first introduced to Pilates in 1997 when I lived just outside London and it became my preferred way to relax, whilst getting back into shape following the birth of my two children. I was intrigued by the strength I gained in my abdominal muscles from relatively simple exercises. The exercises then came into their own after a back injury sustained whilst stacking shelves in a supermarket and I quickly regained mobility and agility so I could return to work.

I completed my instructor's training through a well-established and popular institution. My style of teaching is classical Pilates, with plenty of hands-on posture correction (under normal circumstances). I love what I am doing and so there is a relaxed atmosphere to my classes, and fun with small equipment. Each session will always end with a few minutes of calm relaxation, so you are ready to go back to your day-to-day activities fully refreshed.

I really encourage at least two sessions a week to gain the full effect of Pilates and I like to find ways of incorporating the exercises into day-to-day activities, such as walking and driving.

I look forward to welcoming you to the classes and to help you transform yourself into a long, lean and strong physique.

Dexter - "Paws for Pilates"

Hi, I’m Dexter – a rather beautiful Burmese cat. I’ve recently started to take time out to 'Paws for Pilates', which I am loving. My Pilates teacher lives with me and she does live classes twice a week for her clients – well, they are my clients now. I can be anywhere in the house or garden, and my cat sense kicks in at 9.27am every Monday morning, and 7.57am every Friday morning – I know I need to run up two flights of stairs and I announce my arrival by miaowing loudly, just so I can strut my tail in front of the camera. I take part in most classes – sometimes I demonstrate the One Hundred, or a Roll up or Side Leg Lifts. But my favourite is a full body stretch. I help the class by sitting on my teacher’s tummy and in front of her face so that she knows that I am paying attention. The last bit of the class is relaxation so that’s my cue to go climbing and see how many yoga blocks I can knock over. I hope to see you soon – look out for me, Dexter, online, at dexter@ministryofpilates.co.uk xx
